Day 6 of the ROJO fast
Mind over hunger! I’m feeling surprisingly good. I had never gone six hours without eating much less six days. It has always been an ongoing joke about how much I eat in a day. It is not unusual for me to put away > 4,000 calories in a day which is why I was worried about going on a 7 day fast. Because we are still consuming about 275 calories from solid food our digestive systems have not shut down like they would have if we went on a fast where all we consumed were liquids. So unlike a all liquid fast, our hunger never really goes away.
As we approach the final stretch I am thankful for all the support we have received. It has been like a strong wind at our backs. This week has been challenging and insightful. We may never fully understand what it is like to live in extreme poverty but we can begin to appreciate the struggle of the poor in a small way. Hunger is just one of many daily challenges facing those living in poverty. While we may have been hungry during our fast, we still had access to clean water, medical services, a warm bed and the comfort of knowing that if we really wanted to we had access to any food we wanted.
It is only by luck or divine providence that we were not born into a life of extreme poverty. Who are we to judge to plight of the poor? Who are we to not do something about it?
